Sound analysis

 1) Find a film clip on YouTube that uses sound in an interesting way. Analyse the use of sound, making sure you use the key language we have learned about sound in film:

  • Diegetic and non-diegetic sound
  • Parallel and contrapuntal sound
  • Sound bridges
Remember to discuss/analyse all the different types of sound present in the clip:
  • Music
  • Dialogue
  • Voiceover
  • Sound effects

This scene is from "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly"

In this scene, one of the characters, Tuco, is getting brutally tortured. The person in charge signals to people to play music to hide the noises of the torture. When he first attacks him, the singers start to sing. The use of the music is contrapuntal as it has a slow, peaceful and sombre tune, whilst having a torture scene. It creates an unsettling feeling for the audience. The clip uses diegetic sound throughout to transport the audience to that setting and not adding in foreign sound effects. The use of the exaggerated sound effects as it engages the audience more and creates more of an atmosphere. The use of the sound bridge at 3:36 helps create the next part of the clip making the fiddler the main focus - the noise of the violin then abruptly stops showing his outburst of emotions. The use of the dialogue and the music playing at the same time enhances the tension of the scene. At the end of the clip, Angel eyes turns his head and smiles as he has now found out what he needed, at the same time the music finishes.
