Editing video feedback/learner response

Editing task - YouTube

1) Type up your feedback/comments from your teacher.

  • Superb production - incredibly engaging, conversation very well scripted and delivered, I was genuinely following the narrative!
  • Clear cutting on action at the start, well editing with good pace.
  • Framing of OTS shots could have been angled slightly in - shot behind your shoulder slightly better than the other side.
  • 180 degree rule perfect. Perhaps a little more shot variety needed for conversation of this length (though pace of editing for conversation excellent).
2) Type up your feedback from fellow students.

  • Very good plot
  • Nice match-on-action shots
  • Nice continuity
  • Focus on first shot was a bit unfocused

3) Now reflect on your video. Did you meet the brief and successfully include the three key editing aspects we have learned?

I full met the brief, including the match-on-action, using 180 degree rule and shot-reverse-shot. I think overall the editing was good. There were some minor issues however which I need to work on for the coursework.

4) What were the strengths and weaknesses of your final film? Write a detailed analysis picking out specific shots, edits and any other aspect of film language you think is relevant.

The use of the match-on-action shots were good as we can see what is happening in a specific sequence without the object being in different place whilst changing the shot. The shot-reverse-shot was done well. However when placing the camera, there was a bit of dead space so when placing the camera, it should've been at an angle so that we can also see the distance between the two characters and utilising the unused room. The clip was long to just use shot-reverse-shots, so I could've added different shots e.g. close-ups on the files/facial expressions etc.

5) Learner response: what aspect of editing did you find most difficult? What have you learned from this process that will help you when you start the actual coursework later this year?

The most difficult was doing the match-on-action shots and making sure there wasn't any dead space whilst doing the OTS shots. Doing match-on-actions were hard as when piecing the two clips of the same action, you had to make sure the subject that is moving is at the same point, otherwise it will be confusing when watching. When making sure there was no dead space, you had to make sure that the camera was placed and framed in specific way so all the room had an important use in that frame.
