Statement of Intent: Learner Response

RATTAN, Viraj

Mark: 6

Grade: C

Comments for AQA:

  • This is a good, clear statement of intent that offers a good concept that matches the TV crime drama / TV listings magazine brief. It fits the target audience appropriately and certainly feels like a ‘Netflix style’ show.
  • Media language elements are considered thoughtfully although perhaps lacking specific details in places. It is not clear exactly what the three-minute extract will include aside from opening anonymous dialogue and also how much the audience knows about the characters from episode 1.
  • Representation is addressed effectively with reference to race/ethnicity and media theory is applied appropriately. More detailed or sophisticated application of the theory could push this towards the top levels.
  • Audience is addressed competently with audience pleasures and media consumption discussed. Like representation, it lacks a little sophistication for the top level.
  • Digital convergence is touched on with reference to streaming but needs to link the video and print elements for the top levels. Print element of brief is lacking some specific detail too.

Feedback:

  • This is not far from the top levels and just needs finalising in places – title, tagline, a bit more detail or sophistication in places.
  • One element to address here is the actual three minute extract – it feels like the first few seconds are planned out but it’s not clear from there. I would also recommend checking the brief carefully and making sure you are sticking to it 100% - e.g. the brief does not mention a title sequence.
  • Think about layout for your statement – perhaps consider subheadings / bullet points in places. This may help save you words in the word count too. The key element of statements of intent is ‘how’ or ‘why’. What are you trying to communicate to the audience? How will you construct that particular representation?
  • Representation is strong with the race/ethnicity focus and good use of theory. Can you expand on the theory elements a little? Again, can you say how/why here?
  • Print brief is addressed but you’ll need to go back to this in January to add specific details when you have planned that element.
  • Industries and digital convergence is also covered but perhaps look at this again when you have more detail for the print brief and then you can discuss links/consumption between the two products.

Next steps:

  • Copy and paste this feedback to your Media 2 coursework blog with the title ‘Statement of Intent feedback and learner response’.
  • As your learner response, pick out the three improvements/changes you need to make to your Statement of Intent before producing a final draft.
  • Re-draft your statement of intent using Microsoft Word / Google Docs – you may wish to do this after Christmas when we have completed research and planning for the print element of the brief.

LEARNER RESPONSE:

  • I need to include the specific details of what is to be seen in my 3 minute clip.
  • Include the social and cultural contexts in terms of representation in my drama.
  • Add further theory for media language and how this links to the media language and representation in my drama.
