Sound analysis

  1) Find a film clip on YouTube that uses sound in an interesting way. Analyse the use of sound, making sure you use the key language we have learned about sound in film: Diegetic and non-diegetic sound Parallel and contrapuntal sound Sound bridges Remember to discuss/analyse all the different types of sound present in the clip: Music Dialogue Voiceover Sound effects The good The Bad and The Ugly - Angel Eye and Tuco torture scene - YouTube This scene is from "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly" In this scene, one of the characters, Tuco, is getting brutally tortured. The person in charge signals to people to play music to hide the noises of the torture. When he first attacks him, the singers start to sing. The use of the music is contrapuntal as it has a slow, peaceful and sombre tune, whilst having a torture scene. It creates an unsettling feeling for the audience . The clip uses diegetic sound throughout to transport the audience to that setting and not adding in foreign sou...

Sound: parallel and contrapuntal learner response

  1) Type up your feedback from your teacher. Superb - you can tell from the audience reaction just how effective it is. Excellent choice of images. Music is perfect for the brief, and it is genuinely funny. Several bits of opening section edited in time with music - very effective technically. Very much feels like a production for the Tik Tok generation!      2) Type up your feedback from fellow students - you can summarise key points if several students give you similar feedback. WWW - Amazing timing, editing, music choice. EBI - Make the clip size bigger.  3) Now  reflect  on your work and write your own evaluation of your video. Write a 'What went well' (WWW) paragraph and a paragraph for 'Even Better If' (EBI) underneath the rest of your feedback. WWW - I followed the brief. The change in contrast from parallel to contrapuntal was clear. EBI - I could've made the size of the clips larger and the first clip was a bit too long, so I could've ma...

Blog feedback and learner response

WWW: You’ve made an excellent start to A Level Media on the coursework side – well done! It really comes across strongly that you’ve studied the subject before and picked up a lot from the GCSE in Media (the use of media theory in both your analytical tasks is so good to see!) Your mise-en-scene recreation was excellent and shows that you have the interesting cross-section of skills required for this course – both practical and analytical. EBI: You just need to post your learner response to the recreation and your blog will be fully up to date. In terms of your analytical work, it’s great to see media theory but also make sure you are exploring the potential meanings in all the different aspects of a text. When using CLAMPS, for example, you may want to focus in on just two or three of the areas but really write in detail about the meanings created. LR: Create a blogpost on your Media 2 Coursework blog called ‘Blog feedback and learner response’, copy this feedback in and then complete...

Film and TV language: Lighting

1) Still image analysis:  1 - Low key lighting, uses key lighting .  This creates a contrast on the face form one side being bright and the other being dark. The key lighting is at an angle so also shows the smoke coming from the cigarette.  2 - Low key lighting, uses underlighting . This creates an eerie or atmosphere, most associated with a horror film. Some parts of a face are light up, but her facial features e.g. eyes, nose, lips, are hidden due to the underlighting , which creates a sense of enigma (Barthes). It makes the face look like a skeleton - links to key conventions of a horror film. 3 - High key lighting, uses underlighting and backlighting. Gives a realistic look, but also makes a silhouette creating realism. The underlighting  produces a shadow just above the eye, creating an element of horror . 4 - Low key lighting, uses backlight . The low key lighting creates a chiaroscuro effect creating a dramatic shadow/darkness across his face. Half hi...

Mise-en-scene recreation: Learner Response

My recreation -  https://youtu.be/uFX2ppZ94lo   1) Type up your feedback from your teacher in full. Fantastic choice of clip! Good performance - expression and make-up particularly impressive here. Props good too (toy telephone added to comedy but perhaps lost a little in terms of the recreation!) Impressive attention to detail - clear you analysed the scene in detail. EBI - focus 2) Use the feedback you've been given to write your own self-assessment of your video using WWW (What Went Well) and EBI (Even Better If...) WWW: I had good facial expressions. Costume and make-up was on point, and so was the setting and lighting . EBI: The camera went out of focus at some parts, so I need to make sure that the lighting compliments the focus of the camera. 3) Now reflect on your own work in more detail. How did your planning help clarify and develop your ideas? I watched the scene multiple times and made a shot list of all the shots within that clip. I also made a note of all the CL...
